Questions

What area do you serve?

We serve all of Fairfield County.

Are your services limited to primary residences?

We inventory many different types of spaces, including small businesses, second homes, yachts, country clubs. Visit What We Do: Other Services for details.

How necessary is it to document and catalogue every item?

It is very important to visually document and individually catalogue items of particular value. These include antiques, artwork, collectibles, custom furnishings, oriental rugs, jewelry, furs, and special articles of clothing.

Also include china and silverware as well as specialized cooking equipment and wine collections. Musical instruments and computer, sporting and entertainment equipment should also be on the list. It’s important to make a record of any custom construction, changes or renovations to your home as well.

Inventory as much or as little as you like of everyday household items: toys, clothing, linens, furniture, dishes, books, CDs, etc. Since our video recording and still photography capture these items in the context of your home, you will at least have photographic evidence of ownership and, to some degree, condition and details.

When we visit your home, we can make specific recommendations as to what should be included in your inventory.

Do I have to schedule housecleaning services before you arrive? After you’re done?

Not to worry — we’re not the crew from House Beautiful. Our job is to create a personal, objective documentary for you, period. And we leave every home exactly as we found it. Remember, our reputation rides on our clients’ trust. We do everything to preserve that trust.

Do I really have to give you all of my sales receipts to complete my inventory?

If that’s not possible, then whatever you’re able to pull together — even if it’s incomplete — is better than nothing. You can also give us your best estimate of an item’s purchase price. And you can always fill in the gaps with more precise information over time.

However, for some valuables written appraisals, valuations or receipts are beneficial. We can refer you to licensed and certified appraisers to obtain this documentation.

Remember: according to insurance industry experts, the more detailed your inventory, the more quickly and fairly your claims can be settled.

Why shouldn’t I let my brother-in-law do it for free? Zipping through a house with a camera—how hard can it be?

Doing a home inventory right means thinking in evidentiary terms. And that takes a lot more than simply “zipping through the house with a camera.” After people get started and see how much it involves, discouragement and impatience often set in — and they never finish.

How deep into my closets and drawers will you go?

As deep — or not — as you want. Replacing everyday items, however, can really add up. So it does make sense to visually record the overall contents of your closets, cabinets or drawers.

“Protecting your household goods and personal possessions is as important as protecting your home itself. But it is nearly impossible to tell how much you own or what it’s all worth unless you make an inventory.”
